Mercedes-AMG Project One
Mercedes
is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its AMG performance division this year
and
it chose the Nurburgring 24 Hour race last weekend as the place to start.
The annual production car event is renowned as the biggest in the world, with a
field of about 170 cars mainly from German brands Mercedes, Audi, BMW and
Porsche
Mercedes-AMG Project One powertrain has been
revealed ahead of its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
It is a behemoth of powertrain which will have a
bhp output the exceeds 1,000bhp.
The complex system is bottomed form Mercedes
grand prix racers and has additional electric motors mounted to the front
wheels.
One 80kW motor to
keep the turbo spooled at all times, a 120kW motor attached to the crankshaft
and two 120kW motors mounted to the front axle.
It is based
on the same engine that powered Lewis Hamilton to the 2015 World Driver’s Championship.
To buy one of these car, it would
cost you north of £2.2million and the car is slated to go on sale in
2019.
Essentially, the Project One will
be a slightly de-tuned road-legal Formula One car
